Alishan is the most famous scenic spot in Taiwan. Its sunrise and railway culture are world-class. It has also been listed as a potential world cultural heritage. Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is the most important attraction in Alishan. Whether you want to watch the sunrise, take a train, enjoy cherry blossoms or look for giant trees, you can be satisfied here. It is almost impossible to visit all the attractions in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area in one day. I suggest you better plan a trip of more than two days.

Because of the sunrise and stargazing trips, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is open all day. You have to buy a ticket to get in. You can freely enter and exit the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area for 24 hours after you buy the ticket. Just remember to get a stamp at the ticket office when you go out (if it is not open at night, go directly to the entrance to stamp).

Next you need to confirm the departure time of the sunrise train. If it’s raining or foggy that morning, you won’t be able to see the sunrise. If you want to increase your chances of seeing the sunrise, you can choose to visit Alishan in autumn. If you are worried about missing the sunrise, you can also buy a two-day rail pass that can be used for two consecutive days. There is another benefit to buying a two-day pass. Because the attractions of Alishan are all on the mountain, you can take the train to a higher place first and then walk down. If you travel with the elderly and children, you can make the journey a little easier.

If you want to watch the sunrise in the early morning of the next day, remember to go to Alishan Station first to see the departure time. I suggest that you arrive at Alishan Railway Station earlier. If the departure time is 5:30, you should arrive at the station at least one hour earlier (about 4:30) to buy a ticket, and then enter the platform half an hour earlier (about 5:00) to line up (If you enter the platform too late, you may not be able to take a seat and you have to stand on the mountain-climbing railway, which is a bit wobbly!). Arriving at the station early will give you a better chance of reaching the various viewing platforms within time. If you miss the first train, your chances of seeing the sunrise are really low.

There are three places to watch the sunrise in Alishan, namely the Ogasawara Observation Deck, the Zhushan Sun Viewing Platform, and the Dugaoyue Sun Viewing Platform. Although the sunrise can be seen from all three places, the difficulty of reaching is different. Zhushan Sun Viewing Platform (Because Zhushan Station is currently under reconstruction, so you have to walk from Dugaoyue Station to Zhushan Station) and Dugaoyue Sun Viewing Platform are both next to the train station. If you want to go to the Ogasawara Observatory to watch the sunrise, you have to go up from Zhushan Station. Because the view here is the best, if you are physically fit, it is recommended that you go straight to the Ogasawara Observation Deck.

阿里山是全台灣最著名的景點，其日出美景和鐵道文化都是世界級的水平，也已被列為世界文化遺產潛力點。阿里山國家森林遊樂區是阿里山裡最重要的景點，不管是看日出、坐火車、賞櫻花還是找神木，這裡都有。你若想要一天搞定阿里山國家森林遊樂區，那是難如登天，所以最好安排兩天以上行程，才能輕鬆暢遊阿里山國家森林遊樂區。因為有日出和觀星行程，所以阿里山國家森林遊樂區是二十四小時開放，你什麼時候都能進去，但進去就得買票，票是以二十四小時計，意思是你買票之後的二十四小時，都可以自由進出阿里山國家森林遊樂區，只要出去時記得去售票處蓋個章（晚上沒開時，直接到入口處蓋章）。當然，如果你買了票都不出來也沒人會理你，裡面餐廳、飯店一堆，住一個月都不出來也沒問題，這樣還是只需要付一次入園費。話雖如此，但阿里山的大型停車場仍是隨時保持近乎客滿狀態，就算你半夜進去，也一樣只剩個位數的停車格，真的不要懷疑！

接下來你要搞定看日出行程，看日出其實是靠運氣，下雨、起霧就會看不到。一般來說，秋天看到的機率最高。若你擔心錯過，可以買兩天的鐵道二日券，你就有兩次機會坐火車去看日出，你要一天一天買也可以，只是較不划算。買二日券還有個好處，因為從入口處到各個景點都是往上走，所以如果你要輕鬆一點，建議你先坐火車到高處，再走下來，有老人小孩的可以省點力。

如果你隔天凌晨要看日出，記得到達阿里山國家森林遊樂區後，就要先去阿里山車站看隔天凌晨的發車時間，建議要提早到達阿里山火車站，若發車時間是5:30，你要提早一小時（即4:30）到達車站買票，然後提早半小時（即5:00）進月台排隊坐火車（若太晚進月台，你可能坐不到位置，要站著坐登山鐵路，有點晃！），這樣你才比較有機會在時間內到達各個觀景平台看日出。若你錯過第一班車，那看到日出的機會其實不大。

阿里山有三個看日出的地點，分別是小笠原觀景台、祝山觀日平台、對高岳觀日坪。雖然三個點都能看到日出，但到達難度不同，祝山觀日平台（因祝山車站目前整修中，所以你得要從對高岳車站走到祝山車站）和對高岳觀日坪都在火車站旁，下車就到，輕鬆愉快。若要到小笠原觀景台看日出，你還要從祝山車站再往上走，因為這裡視野最好，所以如果你體力許可，推薦你直攻小笠原觀景台。
